These snakes, especially young ones, are semi-arboreal, said Heyborne. They are mostly nocturnal, though they will sometimes come out during the day to sun themselves in cooler temperatures. Behaviorīoa constrictors are typically solitary, said Heyborne. They are often found near streams or rivers, according to the ADW.

They can also be found in dry tropical deserts and semi-deserts, woodlands, scrub and agricultural areas. When they do reside in rainforests, they tend to stick to the edges or clearings. Though stories often depict boa constrictors living in jungles, their habitats are actually much more diverse. Previously, scientists thought that all members of the family Boidae were New World snakes, but certain boa species have been discovered in remote areas such as Mauritius and New Guinea, according to the San Diego Zoo. They are also found on islands in the Caribbean and off the Pacific coast. They are found throughout the Americas, ranging from northern Mexico through Central America and into Peru on the west side of the Andes and south to Argentina on the east side. So I wouldn't recommend owning something that big if you live alone or if no one in the home would be willing to step in in an emergency.Boa constrictors are New World snakes, meaning they live exclusively in the Western hemisphere, according to the ADW. But it's just something that's not worth risking because of her size. I raised her and I know her temperament and she's pretty relaxed being held. There has to be someone else at least within eyesight of the person holding her. And there's a general rule in my home where no one handles her when they're home alone. I have a female red tail that is currently up to 6.5 feet and still growing and her strength is insane. If they were to wrap around your neck accidentally before you could stop them, and there was no one else there to help you, it would be game over. Not out of malice or because it's hungry but simply because they're trying to hold onto your body, and they're strength at that size is incredible. Not because of the size alone, but simply because a snake that big can easily accidently strangle you. But when it comes to the bigger snakes like red tails who reach 7-9 feet, it's just not safe to go it alone by yourself. Like a normal ball pythons size would be the biggest you could go it alone. It's not recommended to handle anything by yourself that is over 5 or so feet. Ball pythons are too small for me, Red Tails and Burmese are too large. I'm sort of biased, because that's what I own, but I feel like they are the perfectly sized snake. If size is a concern for you, and you won't miss the vivid red tail, I recommend a Boa Imperator for your situation.

On the other hand, full grown red-tails can be a handful. No problem for an average adult, male or female. This guy is holding a pretty good sized full grown boa imperator:

Most pet shops I've been to actually don't know there is a difference, but straight from wikipedia articles: imperators average between 1.5 meters and 2.7 meters (5 feet to 8 feet 6 inches) red-tails average between 6 to 10 feet, with females commonly surpassing 10 feet and males commonly surpassing 8 feet. Also, their tails are more brown than red. Are you getting a Boa Constrictor Imperator or a Boa Constrictor Constrictor? Imperators, which is what I have, are noticeably smaller.
